Makeup

Kohl was kept in these pots.

All Egyptians wore makeup, even children. Everyone wore black kohl which was used to outline the eyes. Kohl wasn’t only makeup; it also protected your eyes from the blinding Egyptian sunlight. Kohl was made when minerals were crushed into powder and mixed with wax. With the black kohl they wore blue and green eye shadow, which they made from minerals. They wanted their eyes to bring all the attention. They only wore the eye shadow when they were being fancy though. They also used lipstick and blush. Both things were made from red minerals. The red minerals came from rouge, which came from red ochre.

Egyptians didn’t just use makeup but they also used sweet perfume. Perfume was made from sweet-scented oil. Rich woman that went to feasts wore perfume cones on their wigs to help them smell nice. During the night the hot sun would melt the cone and the sweet oil wax would drip down the wigs and onto the dresses, making them smell very nice. Perfume was kept in animal-shaped containers by some Egyptian people. Bottles and vases of perfume and makeup were kept in a chest.

Egyptians also used one more technique to help them look good. They didn’t use soap, but they did use oil, which softened their skin very nicely. They even had and use cleansing creams and body scrubs, and like today, they had ladies plucking their eyebrows for them. Egyptians wanted to be one thing, beautiful. Some of the things they used to help them look beautiful were mirrors, combs, tweezers, and makeup, all things that we use and need today! All the Egyptians wanted to do was look their best and they proved that, they made themselves look and feel beautiful, with their makeup, clothing, jewelry, and cloth.
