Taxes and Money
Until the Persian Period, Egypt didnt have coins or money as we know it. People paid for things- including their taxes - "in kind", which meant with goods and work. They had to give part of whatever they grew or made to the government, and some of their time, too. The Egyptians work tax is now described as a "corvee". Corvees were very well organized, and were used for many tasks, from digging irrigation channels to carry out building project. In fact , if it wasn't for the Corvees, the pyramids would never have been built.
