Embalming the Body

Embalming the body has many steps. The first thing the embalmers would do is take the body to a tent called an "ibu" or place of purification. In the tent the embalmers wash the body with good-smelling palm wine then rinse the body water from the Nile. Secondly one of the embalmers cut the left side of the body and removes all internal organs, it is important to remove these because they are the first part of the body to decompose. The liver, lungs, stomach and the intestines are wash and packed with natron which will dry them out. The heart is not taken out because it is the center of the intelligence and feeling and the person will need it in the afterlife. Thirdly a long hook is used to smash the brain and pull it out of the nose piece by piece. Next the body is now stuffed and covered with natron. All the fluid and rags from the embalming process are buried with the body. After forty days the body is washed again with the water from the Nile the covered in oils to keep the skin elastic. The dehydrated internal organs are wrapped in linen and returned to the body. Finally the body is stuffed with dry material like sawdust, leaves and linen so it looks life like. The body is covered in good-smelling oils and is now ready to be wrapped.
